Upper Canada College, William P. Wilder Arena & Sports Complex
Initially, Upper Canada College tendered this project as bid-spec, but prices exceeded the budget. A design build process was then initiated, and Ball Construction Inc. through a diligent value engineering process, was successful in bringing the project in on budget, lower than other bidders, and was awarded the work.
The William P. Wilder twin pad arena which includes both Olympic and NHL size ice surfaces as well as an Alumni lounge and viewing area, replaces an old rink which had exceeded its useful life. College administration collaborated with donors and alumni to raise the necessary funds to construct a new facility which would fit in and have a high degree of energy efficiency and model sustainability. LEED Gold was achieved for the project and included a highly sophisticated energy model.
