2022 Provincial Election Update

Here is what you need to know:

Construction Labour Endorsements
Six Ontario construction unions have endorsed the Progressive Conservative Party for re-election, including LIUNA and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

Others include SMART Local 285, UA with its plumbers, pipefitters and sprinkler fitters; boilermakers; and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. The Ontario Pipe Trades Council (OPTC) also announced its “full endorsement” of the PCs on May 18.

Environmental Policy
The leaders of Ontario’s main political parties highlighted their climate plans in the wake of the recent deadly storm. Announcements include:

  • Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford says Ontario is investing in electric vehicles and electric arc furnaces as part of a plan to fight climate change.
  • NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has announced she would fix the disaster relief program to get money to affected residents quicker and plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.
  • Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca says his party has earmarked about $300 million for a climate resilience plan for municipalities and conservation authorities.
  • Green Leader Mike Schreiner has touted a long list of environmental initiatives, including halving climate pollution by 2030, protecting 30 percent of lands and water by 2030 and reaching net-zero emissions by 2045.
